NCCR SPIN
Core Areas of Excellence
The National Centre of Competence in Research "Spin Qubits in Silicon" (NCCR SPIN) implements measures and resources in five areas.
Knowledge and Tech Transfer
One of the central aims of NCCR SPIN is to transform cutting-edge quantum research into practical technologies and facilitate their adoption in the marketplace. This encompasses a broad spectrum of activities, from developing advanced hardware and software for quantum computing to innovations in nanofabrication, simulations, quantum control equipment, and more. By bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world application, NCCR SPIN seeks to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among researchers and promote the commercialization of research outcomes through industrial partnerships and collaborative projects.
To support this mission, NCCR SPIN has launched a variety of initiatives, such as SPINnovate, the Quantum Industry Chat, and specialized coaching and entrepreneurship courses for start-ups. These programs are designed to equip scientists and innovators with the tools, knowledge, and networks needed to bring their ideas to market and drive technological progress in the quantum field.
Outreach
TNCCR SPIN is dedicated to sharing the excitement and significance of quantum science with the broader public. Our outreach activities are designed to inspire curiosity, promote understanding, and encourage engagement with science at all levels. We collaborate with schools, organize public lectures and events, and develop educational resources to make quantum research accessible and relevant to people of all ages.
Through these efforts, we aim to demystify quantum technologies, highlight their potential impact on society, and encourage the next generation to explore careers in science and technology. By building bridges between researchers and the wider community, NCCR SPIN fosters a culture of openness and shared discovery.
Young Researchers
Supporting the development of early-career researchers is a core priority for NCCR SPIN. We understand that young scientists need clear pathways to build their skills, gain experience, and advance their careers-whether in academia, industry, or other sectors. NCCR SPIN offers a robust framework of funding, training, and professional development to nurture the next generation of scientific leaders.
We provide comprehensive support for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, including tailored training programs, skills workshops, and opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary projects. Recognizing the importance of both technical expertise and transferable skills, we encourage our young researchers to broaden their horizons, enhance their scientific communication, and engage with the wider community. By fostering a culture of curiosity and ambition, NCCR SPIN helps young scientists gain the confidence and competence needed to pursue their chosen career paths and make meaningful contributions to the field.
Equal Opportunities
NCCR SPIN is deeply committed to advancing equality of opportunity for all groups in society. Through a comprehensive suite of measures, we strive to ensure that individuals from diverse backgrounds have equitable access to research, training, and career development. Our approach includes a range of funding schemes and targeted support, such as SPIN Master’s Fellowships and Flexibility Grants, which are specifically designed to encourage the participation of women and other underrepresented groups in science.
We recognize that diversity and inclusion are essential to high-quality research and innovation. By actively supporting those who may face additional barriers, NCCR SPIN aims to create an environment where everyone can contribute to and benefit from scientific progress. Our commitment extends beyond funding, encompassing mentorship, networking opportunities, and tailored support to help all researchers thrive.
Open Science
NCCR SPIN is committed to advancing Open Science, ensuring that research results, data, and methods are accessible to the scientific community and society at large. By promoting transparency, reproducibility, and the free exchange of knowledge, we foster collaboration and accelerate scientific progress. In line with the SNSF’s vision, our researchers publish in open access journals, share data and code openly whenever possible, and engage in best practices for research integrity. Through these efforts, NCCR SPIN aims to make quantum research more inclusive, trustworthy, and impactful, benefiting both science and society.
