High school students exchange with NCCR SPIN researchers in Basel
NCCR SPIN is always open to welcome and stay in touch with high school classes. In that frame, on the afternoon of August 21, 2025, NCCR SPIN had the pleasure of welcoming high school students from the Kantonsschule Baden to the Department of Physics at the University of Basel. Guided by their teacher, Benita Heiz, the visit aimed to give students a taste of “real-life” research, spark curiosity about quantum physics and quantum computing, and help them as they consider future career paths.
The group arrived at around 13:15, and the afternoon began with a 45-minute introductory lecture on the fundamentals of quantum computing by Prof. Dominik Zumbühl. After the talk, the students embarked on a lab tour, organized into three rotating groups. Each group had the chance to visit three different stations:
The Cryo Lab and the SPIN Lab – to explore how a cryostat works and why it is essential in quantum experiments
Meeting with NCCR SPIN young researchers – an open forum to ask questions about quantum physics, quantum computing, and scientific careers
The visit concluded at around 16:00 as the students headed back to Baden—hopefully with many questions answered, plenty of inspiration, and perhaps even an inspiration for a future in science.
Thank you to Benita Heiz and to all the young researchers who participated in making this event successful: Artemii Efimov, Ilya Golokolenov, Aldo Tarascio and Henok Weldeyesus.
