Innovation
One of the central aims of NCCR SPIN is to transform cutting-edge quantum research into practical technologies and facilitate their adoption in the marketplace. This encompasses a broad spectrum of activities, from developing advanced hardware and software for quantum computing to innovations in nanofabrication, simulations, quantum control equipment, and more. By bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world application, NCCR SPIN seeks to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among researchers and promote the commercialization of research outcomes through industrial partnerships and collaborative projects.
To support this mission, NCCR SPIN has launched a variety of initiatives, such as SPINnovate, the Quantum Industry Chat, and specialized coaching and entrepreneurship courses for start-ups. These programs are designed to equip scientists and innovators with the tools, knowledge, and networks needed to bring their ideas to market and drive technological progress in the quantum field.

Upcoming Events
SPINnovate
Established in 2023, SPINnovate is the Innovation Seed Grant Program of the NCCR SPIN, designed to accelerate the translation of quantum computing research into viable technological applications and startup ventures. The program offers two distinct funding schemes—supporting both early-stage exploratory ideas and more advanced technologies nearing market readiness—with non-dilutive grants.
SPINnovate fosters innovation across the NCCR SPIN network by enabling researchers to pursue proof-of-concept development, prototype creation, and the establishment of spin-off companies. Since its launch, the initiative has supported a number of projects, many of which are progressing toward the foundation of quantum technology startups. In doing so, SPINnovate contributes to strengthening Switzerland’s position in quantum innovation.
As part of the Spinnovate grant, the start-up projects receive mentoring and hands-on guidance tailored to each project’s unique development stage and specific challenges.
Knowledge and Tech Transfer Education
NCCR SPIN offers targeted training opportunities and workshops to support the professional development of early-career researchers. These initiatives aim to equip young scientists not only with advanced technical expertise but also with the entrepreneurial skills necessary to translate their research into real-world applications.
A central component of this effort is our Innovation Workshops, which focus on key aspects of quantum entrepreneurship. Participants explore the pathways for transitioning quantum technologies from academic research to industry, gain insight into startup dynamics, and engage in practical exercises such as business case development using frameworks like the business model canvas.
Workshops are interactive and team-oriented, guided by experienced mentors from both academia and industry. They culminate in the presentation of preliminary business concepts, which receive constructive feedback from external experts. Through these activities, NCCR SPIN encourages researchers to actively consider the societal and commercial potential of their work.
Quantum Industry Day in Switzerland
NCCR SPIN is a co-organizer of the Quantum Industry Day in Switzerland (QIDiS)—a national event that brings together academic and industrial R&D communities to foster exchange and accelerate the development of quantum technologies. The program features keynote lectures, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, with dedicated sessions on quantum computing, sensing, communication, and instrumentation. In addition to its strong industry focus, QIDiS offers tailored formats for academic participants and career-oriented sessions for students, highlighting opportunities in the emerging quantum economy.
Quantum Industry Chat
The Quantum Industry Chat is an outreach and networking event organized by NCCR SPIN to strengthen dialogue between research and industry across the quantum technology landscape. Tailored for companies with an interest in quantum computing and its enabling technologies—such as nanofabrication, electronics, and cryogenics—the event combines introductory sessions on the quantum supply chain with direct exchanges on emerging applications. A poster session and informal networking opportunities create a setting conducive to collaboration, allowing participants to explore the translational potential of NCCR SPIN’s research and gain strategic insight into the evolving quantum innovation ecosystem.
